New York State Police and county police officers will have an increased presence in Hempstead Village moving forward, as they deal with a depleted police force and have been plagued with gang-related incidents in recent months.
According to Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder, a greater police presence is required to help curb gang crimes in the area.
In response, state, county, and local police agencies will be upping patrols after area officials reached out to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has directed troopers to increase patrols in communities such as Brentwood and Central Islip, where MS-13 has been running the streets.
“New York has long been deeply engaged with local stakeholders to help find a solution to the senseless violence plaguing communities on Long Island,” a Cuomo spokesperson stated. “We welcome any opportunity to offer any support or resources to our law enforcement partners that would put an end to this horrific and unacceptable situation.”
In Hempstead, there have been six reported homicides, nearly half of the 14 recorded in all of Nassau County. There was only four in the village last year.
